Applicant Information 

 

Participants may come from any disciplinary background, and from any stage of their academic career.  Faculty, staff, and administrators who are interested in the role of global public health as a rich learning tool to prepare undergraduate students for complex, highly inter-connected and globalized world as both professionals and educated citizens are encouraged to attend.

Criteria considered for participants of the Summer Institute include:

​

• Participants should be faculty who have existing teaching responsibilities in higher education related to global health, and should be prepared with needs for both collegial input into curriculum/programming and ability to provide a valuable perspective to others.

• Participants will represent a diversity of perspectives, disciplines and ability to engage in an inclusive fashion.

• Priority will be given to participants who have a specific topic/question/project that they will use the Symposium to refine and develop.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

 

• Develop a novel global health course or modify an existing course

• Gain tools to assess and strengthen their institution’s undergraduate curricular programming in global health

• Focus on the challenges and benefits of domestic and international experiential curriculum and reflect on ways to strengthen programming to improve student learning and community partnerships

• Engage faculty from a variety of disciplines and institutions and explore collaborations both at the course and curricular level

Application and Acceptance Process

​

In the application, we will ask each individual to specify which course and/or curriculum they would like to focus on at the Summer Institute. This will allow us to design workshop sessions to align with the needs and interests of our unique group of participants.  The application includes a 500-word personal statement.  We recommend that you write the statement separately then copy the text into the application form (the form does not accept attachments). 

 

Personal statement: Please provide a brief description of the most significant challenge(s) facing undergraduate educators in offering programming in global health (<500 words).

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and applicants will be notified within one month of submission.

Present a Poster

 

Submit a poster abstract!  We are particularly interested to hear about your institution's program, unique course innovations related to global health, and creative ways that your institution has found to integrate global health themes into the undergraduate curriculum and co-curriculum. We will have a poster and networking session one evening.

Poster Criteria:  Posters should be no larger than 36" x 48".  Easel stands will be available for either vertical or horizontal presentation.  Participants can bring their poster either in paper or sturdy format (e.g., mounted on foamcore).

Cost 

​

Registration Fees:  The fee to attend the 2017 Summer Institute is $150 per participant, thanks to a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).  Registration fees include lodging, all meals,  material costs for running the conference, and facilitators.  Participants will be charged at time of acceptance to secure their space.

​

Shuttle: All travel costs are to be covered in full by the participant. We are offering a discounted shuttle service from and to Pittsburgh International Airport for an added fee of $25 per person each way.  Registration fees and shuttle costs may be paid securely online after acceptances have been awarded.

Scholarships:  We strongly believe that any qualified and interested individuals should be able to attend the Summer Institute. If the registration fee is a burden for your Institution, and it otherwise prohibits your participation, please consider applying for a fee waiver.  We are able to provide scholarships to cover registration fees for a small number of participants. Scholarship requests will be available after acceptance notices have gone out.
